Breast augmentation surgery with saline breast implants is the most common type of procedure for surgical breast enhancement. Why? The alternative silicone implants have been surrounded by controversy.
Over a decade ago, the FDA restricted the sale of silicone gel implants. Although they're now available via FDA study protocol, many question whether the safety issues that stopped their use years ago were resolved.
So, the relatively uncontroversial saline implant has gained the lead. This implant, however, still uses silicone, but only as a sac or shell. The surgeon places the rubber-like substance under your natural breasts. The sac is filled with saltwater solution via a valve.
Breast Augmentation Surgery With Saline Breast Implants - Top 3 Risks Despite the lack of controversy about breast augmentation surgery with saline breast implants, no one knows if the procedure is indeed safe and effective for the long term.
Aside from the usual risks that accompany any kind of surgery (e.g., anesthesia side effects, swelling, infection, redness, pain, or bleeding), potential complications from surgical breast enlargement have to do with the following.
Rupture or Deflation - If the sac breaks.
- If the valve is damaged or becomes unsealed.
- May occur rapidly or slowly (could take months or years).
- May be caused by contact with surgical tools during the operation.
- May also happen to an overfilled or under-filled implant.
- May be due to trauma or compression during mammogram.
- May be caused by simple wear and tear over time.
Capsular Contraction - Is when scars or capsules form around the implant, squeezing it.
- May occur after infections or hematoma.
- More often happens when the implant is put atop the breast muscle, beneath the mammary glands.
- Symptoms are slight hardening, discomfort to intense pain, distortion, deflation, and/or displacement.
Pain - Of varied durations and intensities may follow breast augmentation surgery with saline breast implants.
- May be caused by the first two complications.
- May be due to incompetent surgeons not placing the implants correctly, choosing the wrong size or technique, etc.
- May also be caused by a pinched nerve or hindrance of a muscle's natural motion.
Breast Augmentation Surgery With Saline Breast Implants - Other Issues Other complications that have been noted from saline breast implant surgery are:
- is dissatisfied with the results.
- sts or nipples become oversensitive or under-sensitive.
- Calcium deposits around implants are mistaken or can't be distinguished from cancer.
- Prolonged healing.
- Implant penetrates skin.
- Dead tissue forms around implant (necrosis).
- Thinning or shrinking of natural breast tissue.
The possibility of other side effects occurring from saline implants (e.g., breast feeding, cancer, effects on childbearing, etc.) is still in the research stage.
The important thing is for you to go to a trusted clinic, where the doctors will not hesitate to discuss the possibilities with you as well as all your options.
