Five Things to Think About When Considering a Breast Enhancement Procedure

When considering undergoing a breast enhancement procedure, you will get all sorts of information from all over the place. You will get surgeons telling you that the procedure is perfectly safe and nothing will happen. You will get unsatisfied people or those who have experienced horrific side effects warning you that you will ruin your life with breast implants. You will get government studies telling you that maybe implants are safe and maybe they’re not. And all of this is before you even make the decision to have the procedure done. To help you through the process, we’ve put together a list of the five basic things you need to think about when deciding on whether to get breast enhancement surgery.

1) All surgeries carry risk. Be aware of the risks, but don’t let them freak you out. Your implants may harden or eventually deflate. It is, however, highly unlikely that you will end up with one breast in your armpit and one breast around your waist. Also, you won’t get cancer from breast implants.

2) People will notice, and people will comment. Mentally and emotionally prepare yourself for both the positive and the negative attention you will receive by surrounding yourself with supportive friends and family. Develop a positive coping mechanism for people who directly challenge or insult you, be it walking away or singing a happy little ditty to yourself while they’re being rude, insensitive jerks.

3) If you weren’t happy before you went under the knife, you won’t be happy after. Women who undergo breast augmentation have an elevated risk for suicide, and surgeons often screen potential patients for depression and refuse to operate on those who are depressed. On the other hand, most women are completely happy with their breast implants and would recommend the procedure to other women who are thinking about it.

4) Consider alternatives. Maybe you don’t need to go two sizes larger, maybe you just want better cleavage or firmer breasts or a little more fullness. If that’s the case, consider exercise or hormone treatment.

5) Look for a plastic surgeon who is certified by the government. Most women who are unhappy with their breast enhancement procedure had it done by an uncertified physician. Breast enhancement procedures performed by unqualified surgeons are more common than you might think. All it takes is a few classes on the weekend, and any medical doctor can legal perform the procedure. Be sure to get someone who really knows what they’re doing.
